Samawi, is a series of limited edition Lino-cut illuminations, an exploration into the realms of mysticism and spirituality. Inspired by the intricate motifs and the symmetry found in Islamic art and islamic miniatures. Sephiran delves into the timeless themes found in classical modern Arabic poetry and literature, offering a visual tapestry that captivates and inspires.

The Cup Reader illumination, is Inspired by a poem written by Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani. Recalling childhood memories of her aunts having their Turkish coffee cups interpreted by neighbors, Sephiran explores the allure of love and the thrill of future predictions. Extensive research into the ancient art of Tasseography informs this piece, incorporating symbols such as cherries, harps, mushrooms, butterflies, and swans, each carrying significance in predicting happiness, growth, harmony, and joyous future events.

The series’s title, سماوي, evokes the perceived elevated nature of the Arabic language and alludes to the heavenly scriptures written in Arabic. Through her illuminations, Sephiran aims to bridge the gap between past and present, by depicting fictional characters that speak to the human experience, acting as conduits for deeper introspections, creating a unique blend of contemporary storytelling. Each illumination in the Samawi series draws from verses that speak to Sephiran’s own emotions and experiences, using symbolic imagery to convey the essence of the words.
